In 2015 Giovanni B. Bortoluzzi created the 4L Method to encourage the study of the numerous overtone singing techniques.
The method is divided into four parts:
L0: STUDY OF TIMBRICAL QUALITIES
L1: STUDY OF THE HARMONIC SERIES
L2: MELODIES WITH ONE FUNDAMENTAL TONE
L3: MELODIES WITH TWO OR MORE FUNDAMENTAL TONES
«I’ve created the Method 4L to help people understand the possibilities of overtone singing and throat singing, through a map designed for both beginners and advanced.
A quick look at each of the 4 Ls is enough to self-evaluate our level, what goals we want to aim for, where our gaps are and what we can still improve on.
The reason why the numeration starts with 0, is that I wanted to point out that there’s no selection of any overtone on L0, while it is present
on levels L1, L2 and L3. »

«Ho creato il Metodo 4L per permettere a chiunque, principiante o esperto, di orientarsi agevolmente nello studio delle possibilità tecniche ed espressive che questa disciplina offre. Dando anche solo una rapida occhiata ad ognuna delle quattro L, ogni cantante difonico può infatti autovalutare le proprie capacità e conoscenze, al fine di individuare facilmente tutti quegli aspetti tecnici, espressivi e musicali che può ancora migliorare.
La numerazione parte da 0 perché nello studio delle qualità timbriche non vi è selezione di armonici; essa diventa essenziale negli altri tre livelli, via via più complessi. Per questo motivo, ho creato una distinzione e ho numerato con 1, 2, 3 i livelli in cui effettivamente vengono scelti gli armonici in modo consapevole e controllato.»
